Most of us have a private repertoire of small movements we reach for without thinking. Tapping a pen, jiggling a leg, chewing gum, walking up and down while we talk through a problem. For people with ADHD, these are not idle habits to be trained out. They are often doing real work, helping the brain stay alert and on task when the task itself does little to hold it. The brain needs a certain level of arousal to focus
Attention depends on arousal, the brain's general state of alertness. Too little and the mind drifts; too much and it cannot settle. The comfortable middle is where focus lives. In ADHD, regulating that arousal level is harder, particularly during tasks that are repetitive or low in stimulation. The brain dips below the threshold it needs, and concentration goes with it.
Small physical movement appears to help nudge arousal back up. A bit of tapping, fidgeting or chewing adds a steady, undemanding stream of input that keeps the system engaged. It is not a distraction competing for attention. It is closer to background fuel that lets attention keep running.
Why this is a regulation issue, not a willpower issue
It is tempting to read fidgeting as a failure of self-control, a sign that someone cannot be bothered to sit properly and concentrate. The picture from the science of ADHD points the other way. ADHD is a difficulty with regulating attention and arousal, not a shortage of effort. The movement is frequently an unconscious attempt to self-regulate, to keep the brain in the zone where it can work.
This is why telling a fidgeting person to keep still can be counterproductive. The energy that goes into suppressing movement is energy taken away from the task. People often describe concentrating better when they are allowed to move, not despite the movement but because of it.
The leg that will not stop bouncing is sometimes the only reason the rest of the brain is staying in the room.
Movement, boredom and the dull-task problem
The clearest example is the boring task. A long meeting, a tedious form, a stretch of admin that supplies no natural interest. This is exactly where the ADHD brain struggles most, because it has to generate the alertness the task does not provide. Movement helps bridge that gap. It raises the stimulation level enough to make the dull thing bearable and keep attention from sliding off it entirely.
This also explains the familiar contrast: the same person who cannot sit through a routine briefing can lock onto something genuinely engaging for hours. When the task supplies its own stimulation, no extra movement is needed. When it does not, the body steps in.
Different bodies, different strategies
There is no single correct fidget. Some people tap, some pace, some doodle, some need something in their hands. Others find that bigger movement before a task, a short walk or a few minutes of exercise, sets them up to concentrate afterwards. The common thread is using the body to manage the brain's state.
Recognising your own pattern is genuinely useful. If you know that a walk clears your head before deep work, or that you absorb information better standing than sitting, you can build that into your day rather than fighting it. It is worth being careful here. The idea that movement supports attention in ADHD is well grounded in the wider understanding of arousal and regulation, and it fits what many people report. That is different from claiming a specific fidget tool treats ADHD. It does not. So the honest version is this. Movement is a reasonable, low-cost strategy that many people with ADHD find genuinely helps them focus. It is not a cure, not a substitute for assessment, and not something to feel embarrassed about. If anything, understanding why you reach for it can make it more deliberate and more effective.
Working with the body rather than against it
The shift that helps most people is a change in attitude. Instead of treating restlessness as something to be eliminated, it becomes information about what the brain needs. A meeting that allows note-taking and a bit of movement is easier to follow. Work broken into shorter blocks with movement between them holds attention better than one long stretch. A standing desk, a walk before a hard task, a quiet object in the hand: these are practical adjustments, not indulgences.
The goal is fit. An environment and a routine that work with the way the brain is wired produce better results than one that demands stillness and calls the difficulty a character flaw.
