Assessments

6 questions
Do you offer private ADHD assessments in Bedford?

Yes. NeuroFX provides private ADHD assessments for adults and for children aged 6 and over at our Bedford clinic. We also see patients from surrounding areas including Milton Keynes, Northamptonshire, Luton, St Albans and across Bedfordshire. Where appropriate, some appointments can be completed online, but in‑person assessments take place at our Bedford clinic.

How long does an ADHD assessment take?

An ADHD assessment typically involves a detailed clinical interview and review of supporting information. Appointments are designed to allow sufficient time to understand symptoms, developmental history and day‑to‑day impact, rather than relying on brief or tick‑box assessments.

We always recommend allowing up to 3 hours for your assessment interview.

Who carries out ADHD and autism assessments at NeuroFX?

All ADHD assessments at NeuroFX are carried out by experienced clinicians with appropriate training in neurodevelopmental conditions. Our Clinical Lead, Tina Fox, is a Specialist Neurodevelopmental Practitioner and Independent Prescriber (NISP) and conducts every adult assessment personally.

Autism assessments draw on additional ADI‑R and ADOS‑2 input from Cheyenne Contreras, our Child & Adolescent Developmental Specialist.

How quickly will I receive my ADHD assessment results?

Diagnostic outcomes are provided by letter following clinical review of the assessment information and typically within 48 hours. A comprehensive written report is issued after this process, setting out clinical findings and conclusions clearly and in line with NICE guidance. Please allow up to 14 days for your full report.

Can I self‑refer for an assessment, or do I need a GP referral?

You can self‑refer directly to NeuroFX. A GP referral is not required to book a private ADHD or autism assessment. Many patients contact us directly from Bedford and nearby areas after experiencing long NHS waiting times.

What's the difference between an ADHD and autism assessment?

An ADHD assessment is a single, 3‑hour clinical interview using validated tools to explore attention, executive function and developmental history. An autism assessment is more involved, it includes a structured developmental history using the ADI‑R and direct behavioural assessment using the ADOS‑2, conducted in person.

Where co‑occurrence is suspected, we offer a combined ADHD + autism pathway. The autism assessment is charged at the £950 top-up rate, £250 less than a standalone autism assessment, and the price is the same whether you book the two together or separately.

Children & families

4 questions
From what age do you assess children?

We assess children from age 6 and over. ADHD presents differently in younger children and is better evaluated through ongoing observation in nursery or early school settings, we're happy to advise if your child is younger than this.

Do you need input from my child's school?

Yes, for child ADHD assessments, we ask for a teacher questionnaire as part of the developmental history. We provide the forms and guidance; you'll pass them on to your child's class teacher or SENCO. School input genuinely strengthens the diagnostic picture.

How do I talk to my child about being assessed?

This is one of the most common questions we get. Our approach is to be honest and age‑appropriate, frame it as a way to better understand how your child's brain works, not as a search for "what's wrong". We have a short parents' guide in the NeuroFX Library, and we'll walk you through this on your first call.

Will the diagnosis follow my child through school?

Only if you choose to share it. We provide a confidential diagnostic report which you can share with school, SENCO, or DSA assessors at your discretion. We can also issue a separate, school‑facing letter recommending specific reasonable adjustments.

Medication

5 questions
Do you offer ADHD medication and titration?

Yes. Where clinically appropriate, we offer a structured 6‑month treatment package that includes titration, monitoring reviews, prescribing, and clinical oversight. Prescriptions are issued by Tina, our Specialist Neurodevelopmental Practitioner and Independent Prescriber (NISP).

Can I get medication started on the same day as my assessment?

For patients diagnosed at NeuroFX, where clinically appropriate, medication may be started on the same day as your assessment. This is decided on a case‑by‑case basis depending on the clinical picture and what's safe and right for you.

I already have an ADHD diagnosis from another clinic, can you prescribe?

Yes, we support patients diagnosed elsewhere. We require an onboarding review (£250) to ensure the original assessment meets clinical and regulatory standards. Once accepted, you can access our 6‑month treatment plan, and we'll share a summary with your GP.

Will my GP take over prescribing on the NHS?

Many will, once you're stable on medication, under what's called a shared‑care agreement. We support this transition actively, we'll provide the documentation and clinical correspondence your GP needs. Whether your specific GP will accept shared care is a decision they make individually; we'll let you know what we can do to help.

What if the first medication doesn't work for me?

This is exactly what titration is for. Across the 6‑month package we monitor your response, adjust dose or formulation, and switch medication if needed. It's normal to need a couple of adjustments before finding what works, and the structured monitoring is what makes that safe.

Online vs in‑person

3 questions
Can I be assessed entirely online?

For adult ADHD assessments, yes. We deliver assessments online via a secure, GDPR‑compliant video platform across the UK. The diagnostic protocol is identical to in‑person. Autism assessments are best held in person at our Bedford clinic, particularly the ADOS‑2 component.

What if I live outside Bedfordshire?

We see patients from across the East of England in person, including Milton Keynes, Cambridge, Northampton, Luton, Stevenage, Peterborough and London. Beyond that, online is generally the right choice for adult assessments.

Where exactly is the Bedford clinic?

We're at Bedford Consulting Rooms, 4 Goldington Road, Bedford MK40 3NF, central Bedford, with pay and display parking next door and good rail links. The clinic is a calm, residential‑style space, not a hospital.

Cost & payment

5 questions
How much does an assessment cost?

Adult ADHD assessment is £675 (fixed). Child ADHD assessment is £675. Autism assessment is £1,200 standalone, or £950 as a top-up to a completed NeuroFX ADHD assessment. The 6‑month medication treatment package is £995. Combined ADHD + autism pathway is £1,625 (the £675 ADHD assessment plus the £950 autism top-up).

All assessment fees are inclusive of the first conversation, the full assessment, written report, and feedback.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes. Every assessment can be paid in interest-free instalments through Klarna or Clearpay, subject to their eligibility checks. Klarna's Pay in 3 splits the fee across three monthly payments at no extra cost.

Will my insurance cover it?

Some private health insurance providers cover NeuroFX assessments, including Bupa, Vitality and AXA Health. Coverage varies by plan. We can provide a quote or pro‑forma invoice for you to submit to your insurer before booking.

What if I need to reschedule?

Rescheduling is free with more than 72 hours' notice, and cancellations made more than 72 hours before the appointment are refunded in full. With less notice the appointment is non-refundable and rescheduling is at our discretion, because the clinical time has been held for you. If something unexpected happens, call us and we will do what we can.

What if you don't diagnose ADHD or autism?

You still receive a full assessment, a written report explaining what was found and ruled out, and any onward recommendations. The fee is for the assessment, not for the outcome, and a clear "no" can be just as valuable as a diagnosis.

Booking, policies & support

4 questions
Is there a waiting list, and how soon can I be seen?

A private NeuroFX assessment is typically completed within 6 to 8 weeks of your first call. You will see live availability when you book online, and we may close appointments if availability becomes limited.

What is your cancellation and rescheduling policy?

Cancellations more than 72 hours before the appointment are refunded in full, and rescheduling with that much notice is free. With less than 72 hours' notice the appointment is treated as used, so it is non-refundable, and rescheduling is at our discretion. We understand that life events happen, and we will always try to work with you. Please call us on 0333 533 3303 to change your appointment.

Can I get emergency or out-of-hours support from NeuroFX?

No. NeuroFX does not provide out-of-hours or emergency services. In an urgent situation, please contact your GP or call NHS 111 and choose option 2 for mental health. If you are concerned that someone is at risk to themselves or others, call the emergency services on 999.

Do you offer coaching or therapy?

No. NeuroFX focuses on assessment, diagnosis and medical treatment. Where coaching or therapeutic support would help, we are happy to signpost you to trusted external providers.

After diagnosis

3 questions
Will my GP accept a NeuroFX diagnosis?

Yes. Our reports are written by clinicians registered with the NMC, follow NICE‑aligned protocols and are routinely accepted by NHS GPs, employers and educational institutions. We can also support shared‑care arrangements where your GP is willing.

Will you write a letter for my employer or university?

Yes. For patients diagnosed with us, we can issue formal letters supporting reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act 2010, for employers, universities, DSA assessors and schools or SENCO teams. These supporting letters are provided free of charge.

What ongoing support is there after diagnosis?

If clinically helpful: medication and titration as a 6‑month package, follow‑up reviews, supporting letters, and onward referral to psychological therapy or ADHD coaching. You don't have to choose ongoing care to be diagnosed with us, many patients return to GP‑led NHS support.
