The assessment

What a child autism assessment in Watford involves.

Child autism assessment uses the gold-standard ADOS-2 plus ADI-R protocol, family-led, in person at our Bedford clinic. Aligned to NICE CG128, for children aged 6 to 17. Not available online because ADOS-2 requires direct observation.

Step 01

Get in touch

Parent or carer referral. We discuss whether NeuroFX assessment is the right fit and what existing evidence would be useful (school, SENCO, previous reports).

Referral or phone
Step 02

Pre-assessment screening

ASSQ short (parent and teacher) plus a structured developmental history form. Allow up to 2 hours to complete carefully.

~2 hours · parent + teacher
Step 03

ADI-R parent interview

Detailed informant-led ADI-R interview with parents (child not present). Covers early development, social reciprocity, language and restricted/repetitive behaviour.

~2.5 hours · in person or video
Step 04

ADOS-2 observation with your child

A semi-structured ADOS-2 observation with Tina and our specialist ADOS-2 practitioner Cheyenne Contreras. Calibrated to your child’s language level, for ages 6 to 17.

~1 hour · in person at Bedford
Step 05

MDT review and written outcome

Internal MDT review of all evidence. The diagnostic outcome comes to you in writing within 7 days, and if a follow-up video call would help, we arrange one to talk it through in a calmer setting than the assessment day.

Outcome within 7 days
Step 06

Written report & EHCP-ready evidence

NICE CG128-aligned written report including ADOS-2 and ADI-R findings, diagnostic formulation, recommendations, and SENCO/EHCP-ready clinical detail.

Within 14 days

Every NeuroFX child autism assessment is conducted personally by Tina. 15 years of specialist mental health nursing experience and extensive neurodiversity specialist care, having conducted hundreds of ADHD and autism assessments. Tina is also an independent prescriber and an advanced specialist paediatric sleep practitioner. Assessments and prescribing follow NICE CG128 (autism in under-19s).

For Watford patients in particular, child autism is multidisciplinary by design. Tina leads your assessment and report; Cheyenne Contreras, NeuroFX's specialist ADOS-2 practitioner, co-conducts the ADOS-2 observation. After the session both clinicians attend the internal MDT case review before your follow-up video call. Meet Cheyenne on the About page →

Your local NHS context

Watford autism waiting times and your NHS options.

You are served clinically by NHS Central East ICB. A private NeuroFX assessment is typically 6 to 8 weeks (next available soon).

What the local data means for patients

Watford sits close to the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield, whose researchers have helped shape how the world supports autistic children: a University of Hertfordshire team published a review of 40 studies in PLOS ONE in 2022 finding that robot-assisted interventions, including the university's own KASPAR robot, can meaningfully improve social functioning for younger autistic children. Locally, that interest in inclusion is visible at Vicarage Road, where Watford FC opened a sensory room for autistic young fans and marked Autism Acceptance Month in April 2026. The pressure on services is real, though: in neighbouring East and North Hertfordshire, the NHS trust has reported children waiting around 67 weeks for a community paediatrician and a further 45 weeks for an ASD or ADHD assessment, while Hertfordshire is expanding specialist school places, including relocating the autism-accredited Breakspeare School to a new 210-place site in Croxley Green with an interim expansion at Holywell Primary in Watford.

For adults, NHS Hertfordshire no longer offers routine NHS referrals for adult ADHD diagnosis, pointing instead to the Right to Choose pathway, and shared care between a private clinician and an NHS GP remains at the GP's sole discretion. A private NeuroFX assessment is intended to sit alongside this NHS care, never to replace it, and we always suggest speaking to your GP first if shared care matters to you.

After diagnosis

After your autism diagnosis.

Autism has no NICE-recommended pharmacological treatment, so the conversations after diagnosis are different to ADHD. Here is what to expect for Watford patients.

Right to Choose · autism in Watford

Right to Choose for autism, plainly explained.

Right to Choose lets eligible patients pick any NHS-contracted provider. For autism specifically, the list of RTC providers is shorter than for ADHD, and most published waits are still measured in years.

NeuroFX is a fully private autism assessment outside the RTC framework. We can be quicker (typically 6 to 8 weeks), but you pay the fee directly.

If RTC is your priority, check the tracker first. If you want a clear diagnosis in weeks, that's what NeuroFX is for.

After diagnosis · onward support

What happens after diagnosis.

There is no NICE-recommended pharmacological treatment for autism itself. After diagnosis we focus on:

Onward signposting: Watford community autism services, the National Autistic Society's local peer network, and any free workshops or peer-led groups in the area.

School and study evidence: Your report is written to support SENCO conversations, EHCP applications and Equality Act 2010 reasonable adjustments at school.

Co-occurring conditions: If ADHD is also suspected, we book a separate child ADHD assessment, which can be added at the £950 top-up rate.

About the Watford patients we see

A commuter town that refused to stay one.

Watford occupies a fascinating position at the edge of London -- close enough to be deeply connected to the capital, far enough to have its own distinct identity. It is a real town with a real high street, a real community, and a real pride in Watford FC that goes well beyond match days.

Cassiobury Park in the west of the town is an underrated open space -- a former Elizabethan estate now given over to wide lawns, a paddling area and a miniature railway that gets packed every school holiday. Watford has historically been a working town with strong printing, manufacturing and entertainment industries, and that practical, no-nonsense character persists beneath the commuter belt surface.

This page is for Watford, Hemel Hempstead, Harrow, Uxbridge, Borehamwood, Radlett, Chorleywood, Rickmansworth, Bushey and surrounding villages.

Common questions from Watford patients

Watford autism FAQs.

Anything not here? See our full FAQ page or just call us.

Do you have an autism clinic in Watford?
We do not currently have a physical clinic in Watford itself. Watford patients are seen in person at our Bedford clinic (45 min via M1), or by direct rail (~70 min).
How do I get from Watford to Bedford?
By car: 45 min via M1. Pay and display car park immediately next door (1 minute walk). By train: Watford Junction to London Euston (15 min), cross to St Pancras/Farringdon for Thameslink to Bedford (~45 min). Approximately 70+ min including transfer. Driving is significantly more practical for most patients.
What is the NHS autism waiting time near Watford?
Hertfordshire and West Essex ICB ADHD guidance (notes Right to Choose complexity and shared-care arrangements):. A NeuroFX private assessment is typically 6 to 8 weeks from first call.
What is the fee for child autism assessment in Watford?
Child Autism Assessment is £1,200 family-led in person at bedford, for children aged 6 to 17. Fees can be split across three interest-free monthly payments.
How old does my child need to be?
We assess and treat children from age 6, up to 17. ADHD and autism present differently in younger children and are better evaluated through ongoing observation in nursery or early school settings, so we do not assess under-6s. If your child is younger, get in touch and we will advise. From 18, patients follow our adult pathway.
Will my Watford GP accept a NeuroFX autism diagnosis?
NeuroFX is CQC-registered and our reports follow NICE CG128 (autism in under-19s), so they are written to the clinical and evidential standard GPs expect. You can share your report with your GP, and with school and SENCO teams for EHCP processes. Each organisation decides for itself how it uses a private report.
How quickly can NeuroFX see me?
Typically 6 to 8 weeks from first call to assessment. After the assessment, you receive the written report within 14 days.
Can I have an autism assessment online from Watford?
No. The ADOS-2 observation that sits at the heart of a NICE-aligned autism diagnosis requires direct in-person observation, so we cannot deliver it over video.
