The assessment

What an adult dual ADHD and autism assessment in Stevenage involves.

Adult ADHD and autism present together in a substantial minority of adults. Our dual assessment runs both diagnostic pathways across two structured sessions, sharing developmental history and follow-up but using the separate validated tools for each.

Step 01

Get in touch

Short referral or phone call. We confirm dual assessment is right for you, with a brief screening conversation about whether you suspect both conditions.

Your local NHS context

Stevenage ADHD waiting times and your NHS options.

You are served clinically by NHS Central East ICB. A private NeuroFX assessment is typically 6 to 8 weeks (next available soon).

Data direct from your region

For families in Stevenage, the NHS picture is honest but stretched. Children here are referred through the East and North Hertfordshire community paediatric service, which runs from Lister Hospital, and reporting by The Comet has put the combined wait at around 112 weeks, roughly two years.

For adults, the local picture changed in 2026: the Hertfordshire and West Essex ICB closed on 31 March 2026 and NHS services for Stevenage are now overseen by the new NHS Central East ICB, though where you go for care has not changed. The seriousness of these delays was set out by the Hertfordshire coroner, who recorded in February 2025 that waiting times for autism assessments in the county were around 2.5 years.

Stevenage is not short of local expertise and support; the University of Hertfordshire in nearby Hatfield runs a Psychology and NeuroDiversity Applied Research Unit studying autism, ADHD and access to support, while the Stevenage DSPL2 partnership and SPACE Hertfordshire offer courses and drop-ins for families who do not want to wait for a diagnosis to find help. A private assessment can sit alongside this NHS and community care rather than replacing it, and any move to NHS-funded medication afterwards remains at the GP's sole discretion, so it is worth speaking to your GP before booking if shared care matters to you.

Right to Choose ADHD in Stevenage.

Two things every Stevenage patient asks about. We've separated them clearly here so you can decide your route with full information, rather than discovering the catch after you have booked.

Right to Choose · NHS-funded

Right to Choose, plainly explained.

Right to Choose is an NHS England policy letting eligible patients choose any NHS-contracted provider for ADHD assessment, including some private providers funded by the NHS. It is not a NeuroFX service.

It exists, has helped people, and has been overwhelmed in turn: published waits at many RTC providers are now measured in years. The ADHD UK tracker is the single best place to compare current RTC provider waits.

If RTC is your priority, check the tracker first. If a fast private route is your priority, that is what NeuroFX is for.

Shared care · GP prescribing

Shared care is your GP's decision.

Entering into a shared-care agreement after private titration is entirely at the individual GP's sole discretion, and is also affected by NHS Central East ICB policy. We cannot guarantee any GP will take on prescribing responsibility following a private assessment or titration.

If shared care after titration is a priority for you, speak to your Stevenage GP before booking to understand their position. We will provide a structured handover designed to make that conversation as easy as possible.

No surprises. We'd rather lose a booking than have you discover this after you've paid.

About the Stevenage patients we see

The UK's first new town, still evolving.

Stevenage holds a particular place in British social history as the UK's first new town, designated in 1946 and built as a deliberate experiment in planned community living. Walking through the original town centre -- pedestrianised in the 1950s and effectively the birthplace of the shopping precinct -- you are standing in a significant piece of British urban history.

The town has grown well beyond its new town footprint and now has a substantial aerospace and pharmaceutical presence, with major employers including Airbus, MBDA and GSK shaping a workforce that is technically skilled and international. The old town on the ridge above the A1, genuinely centuries old, has survived rather well alongside it.

This page is for Stevenage, Hitchin, Letchworth, Hertford, Welwyn Garden City, Knebworth, Baldock, Royston, Ware and surrounding villages.
